Although there is no minimum fundraising requirement, we do suggest that you strive to raise at least $25. In order to receive an official Walk MS event t-shirt, participants must raise a minimum of $125. In 2013, Walk MS participants raised an average of more than $135 - challenge yourself. Do I need to bring the Walker Participant ID Envelope you send me the week before the walk if I do not have money to turn in on the day of the Walk?
Yes! Yes! Yes! Even if you turn in an empty envelope, complete the information required. Sign the Waiver of Liability form printed right on the envelope as this will not only protect you but also record your attendance at the Walk.
Can I register for Walk MS the day of the event?
Yes. While it is encouraged to pre-register for Walk MS, we do offer registration the day of the walk. You will need to complete a Walker Participation ID Envelope, which you can get at the registration table when you arrive at the Walk site.
I’m walking and my family will join me. Should they register for Walk MS?
Yes. All walkers, regardless of age, must register to participate in the Walk MS event. This is for your safety and so that each participant qualifies for fundraising incentives, including the $125 minimum to receive a t-shirt. Everyone who participates in the walk, whether he/she raises money or not, must sign the waiver on the Walker Participant ID Envelope that pre-registered walkers will receive the week before the walk or that will be available at registration the day of the walk.
Can my child (aged 12 or under) participate in Walk MS?
Yes - Walk MS is a family event for all ages! Strollers are welcome.
I will be out of town during Walk MS. Can I still participate as a Virtual Walker?
Yes. You do not have to physically be at the walk event to participate. Virtual Walkers can register as an individual or team participant. Virtual Walkers will receive the same benefits and prizes as walkers. Just click on the “Be A Virtual Walker” button.
Where do I send my donations?
Mail all Walk MS donations to the appropriate address below. Be sure to include your name and how the donation is to be credited, i.e., to you directly, to your team or to a specific team member. Please do not send cash.

How long does it take for donations to appear on my personal Web page?
Donations made online are immediately posted to your account and will appear on your Web page at the time of the donation. Donations that are mailed prior to the event can take one to two weeks to appear on your Web page. Donations submitted on the day of the event can take up to three weeks to appear on your Web page. To avoid the wait, encourage your donors to sponsor you online; online donations are safe and easy.
What if my company wants to match my donation?
Contact your Human Resources or Personnel department to learn about your company’s matching gift policies and procedures. Check to see if your company participates by visiting http://www.matchinggift.com/.
Follow the procedure outlined by your company’s matching gift program; printed materials may be mailed to either the Paramus or Oakhurst Office. Refer to the addresses for each office listed above. We will send a confirmation to your company and, upon receipt of the check, we will credit your Walk MS fundraising efforts.
Are donations tax deductible and how do I get a receipt?
Yes. All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. Your cleared check or credit card transaction serves as a receipt. Donors giving $250 or more will automatically receive an acknowledgement letter from the National MS Society by the end of 2014.
Are the walk prizes donated?
No. All merchandise is purchased by the National MS Society New Jersey Metro Chapter. If you would like to use your prize to support the programs and services we provide to your friends and neighbors living with MS, you are welcome to do so. Just check off the appropriate box on the Prize Form that will be sent to you after the walk to donate your prize back to the chapter. Thank you!!
What is the benefit of starting a team?
Participating in Walk MS is more fun when you are part of a team and it is a little known fact that team members raise more than individuals. In 2013, Walk MS Teams raised more than $1.8 million. Team photos will be taken at each walk site and teams can qualify for top fundraising honors and awards including Best Dressed Team.
How many people can I have on my team?
Teams must consist of four or more members in order to receive any team recognition, awards, and prizes. There is no limit to how many team members you can have; the more, the merrier!
I'd like to join an existing team, what should I do?
Go to walknjm.nationalmssociety.org, choose your walk site and click on the "Join a Team" link. You will need to locate your team using the team finder and select it as part of the registration process to ensure you're added to your team roster. If you have already registered as an individual and would like to create or join a team, please e-mail email@example.com for more information.
Can my team hand in our donations together with our team captain?
No, all donations must be handed in individually. Fundraising prizes and incentives are based on individual fundraising success. Teams an fundraise together and distribute the donations among team members by contacting the Teams Department. The day of the walk, each team member must hand in their donations in the Walker Participant Envelope, which you will receive by mail one week prior to the walk (if pre-registered). Envelopes will also be available day-of at registration.
How are top fundraising teams acknowledged?
Top fundraising teams are acknowledged in newsletters, on our website and at the event. Teams are also invited to the Walk MS Awards Party where they will be presented with a plaque or certificate in honor of their accomplishments.
Does my team have a separate meeting area?
Although there is no specific team area, you can specify a meeting area at your walk site location. For instance, you can choose to meet near the registration tent or team photo area. However, if your team raises $10,000 or more for Walk MS 2014 by April 1, 2014, your team is eligible to reserve a team table at the starting line of the event. Team tables are a great place to gather prior to the start of the event. Don't forget to take your team photo once everyone is congregated! Bring your own breakfast to kick start the day and share with your team! Team registration and team t-shirts can also be provided at your team table.
