Walk MS Ambassador - Cheryl Luyster

They say to take life's lemons and make lemonade. Well, I guess you could say my cup is overflowing. In November of 2014, I was diagnosed with Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis; although I had known since the MRI came back in October. As you can imagine, this came with a wave of emotions, no, more like an ocean of emotion. That's when I decided that I needed to learn as much as possible as quickly as possible. Luckily, I happened upon the National MS Society's page. It gave me all I needed to know in a way that for the first time wasn't frightening. Through my research I found my current Neurologist and realized just how much of the funding through the MS Society actually went to research and finding a cure. At that exact moment I realized I didn't just want to be "someone with MS", I wanted to be part of a team of people fighting for a cure to end MS.

Walk MS was the perfect fit, moving forward...together. That's exactly what my journey was about, that's what life is about. With the support of loving family and friends, Team MSBehaving was formed. In the two years that we've participated in Walk MS, we have raised $11,927.00 which was more than expected but just enough to make us strive for more. Our fitness & shop event was such a success we decided to expand our fundraising adding two paint party and shop events in 2017. MSBehaving has an incredible team comradery t-shirts, bracelets and logo items!  That comradery is what means the most. The word itself says "We're in this together" and that's exactly what the MS Society needs, more people in this, together.

For many people a diagnosis changes them. They become so fixated on disease that they forget about who they are, and the message they want to share with the world. My diagnosis was different.  Instead of wallowing in things I couldn't do anymore, it gave me a direction to focus on things I could do! It was life altering, yes, but in an amazing way. MS has given me a new lease on my own life and the lives of others. I have never been more connected to a cause and wanting to help others than I am now.

Roughly two years before my diagnosis entered the realm of possibilities in 2014, I had committed to a lifestyle change. I pushed myself to make healthier choices in all aspects of life. I lost weight, increased my physical activity, and fell in love with running. In July of 2014 I came across this quote "I Can and I Will, Watch Me". That quote resonated within me, and I was moved to have it tattooed on my skin. Now this is how I am approaching my life. At the time I didn't realize how much strength my tattoo and quote would give me. When I was diagnosed with MS, I looked within myself and kept thinking "I Can and Will, Watch Me". Even on my toughest days I can draw strength from within because my life has more purpose now than ever. That quote became Team MSBehaving's tagline and now it gives strength to many. I am incredibly honored to be the 2017 Walk MS Ambassador.

Our mission is to work together to continuously help each other raise funds for necessary research and treatment developments until a cure for MS is found. It plays into our humanity, wanting to help others, striving to leave the world a little bit better than we found it, being somebody to someone else. Life is about coming together to reach a common goal. Keeping that in mind, I encourage everyone to find a local chapter event to help support the National MS Society. Volunteer your time to get to know other walkers, raise a little money (or a lot) to help support the people in your life affected by MS. When it comes to funding and finding a cure, we need all hands on deck. Together, we can end MS.
